Kineo has performed a wide body of work ranging from policy
analysis to commercial installations over the years.
We've tried to gather a representative sample of our recent
projects below. Please feel free to contact us for
more details on any specific project.
Also, much our analysis and development work doesn't lend itself
to nice photos and writeups, but please feel free to contact
us with regards to work in these areas and we can provide
work samples upon request.
University of Oregon
Living Learning Center - Fall 2005
Kineo worked with David
Parker at Advanced Energy Systems (AES) of Eugene Oregon
on the design and build a 50
collector solar water heating system for the University
of Oregon Living Learning Center. The center is a LEED building currently under construction.
Our
primary role in this project was to work with AES to
deliver a competitive system design including component
selection and sizing for the entire system.
We worked with AES and the other contractors on the job
to resolve several design issues as the project evolved.
At the end, KDG delivered the system diagrams,
submittals, and installation & commissioning
instructions for the system.
SunEarth Inc - Summer
2005
When one of North Americas
largest solar thermal manufacturers decided to add PV to
their new 65,000 ft2 facility, they brought
in KDG to manage the project and facilitate the
installation. We assisted with the basic system
design, electrical layout, the racking structures and
the physical placement of components. We also
handled the logistics of the sub-contractors and
delivery of equipment as well as providing our own 2
person crew on-site for the installation. The
completed system was comprised of:
PV
Array
Inverters
1,088 Shell SQ-165's
180 kW STC rating
452 kW AC raing
75 Kw Ballard Ecostar
15 kW Xantrex PV-208
3 SMA 2500-U's
3 SMA 6000-U's
3 Xantrex GT-3.0's
3 PV Powered 2800's
3 Fronius IG-3000's
2 Fronius IG-5100's
3 Outback PS1's w/ Batteries
Tamarack Wellness
Center - Spring 2004
In 2004 KDG performed the design &
component selection for the largest combined pool &
domestic water heating system in Oregon at the Tamarack
wellness center. The combination of 2,285 ft2 of
selective surface collectors combined with a 600 gallon
drain-back buffer tank is used to heat the facility's 92
˚F therapy pool, showers, and
laundry.
In addition to designing the system,
KDG ran the TRNSYS simulations for this unique system to
calculate the energy savings that were used to qualify
the system for credits from the Energy Trust of Oregon.
USFS Tonto National
Forest - Spring 2004
Often times the design of a
new solar water heating system is straightforward as you
have control of the design from the start. When
the US Forest Service contacted KDG for help in
rehabilitating a half dozen campground shower facilities
we knew it would be anything but straightforward.
The existing systems were of an old Methanol percolating
design that required frequent maintenance due to loss of
vacuum. However, much of the existing mechanical
equipment including the collectors & tanks still had
many useful years in them.
We worked with the
maintenance staff at the USFS to propose a handful of
retrofit packages to turn these systems into reliable
closed-loop designs at minimal cost and retrofit labor.
We developed a custom PV powered mechanicals while
keeping much of the array plumbing and custom fiberglass
tanks intact.
